# A-Level Resits for Private Candidates: The Complete Guide

**By Exam Centre Birmingham** · 2026-10-02

_Last updated: 30 September 2026_

You can resit an A-Level exam as a private candidate at any age, and you can re-enter in any summer series. This guide explains how A-Level resit bookings work, when resit exams are actually held, and what happens to your practical endorsement if you're resitting A-Level Biology, Chemistry or Physics.

**Key points**

- You can resit an A-Level as a private candidate without enrolling at a school or college.
- A-Level exams run in the summer series only, so there is no November resit option.
- A passed science practical endorsement can be carried forward when you resit the written exams.
- There is no upper age limit for sitting an A-Level as a private candidate.

## Can you resit an A-Level as a private candidate?

You can resit an A-Level as a private candidate after leaving school or college, by registering with an approved exam centre that enters you directly with the exam board. The centre hosts your exam under the same official conditions as a school exam hall, so the qualification you end up with is identical to one earned first time round. You can read more in our guide to [what a private candidate is](/blogs/learning-hub/what-is-a-private-candidate).

## Why do people resit an A-Level exam?

Most people resit an A-Level to meet a university offer, qualify for a career change, or improve on an earlier grade. Career changers often need a specific A-Level for nursing, teacher training, healthcare or access-to-higher-education routes.

Whatever the reason, the resit process itself — and the certificate you receive — is exactly the same as it would be for any private candidate.

## How do I book an A-Level resit as a private candidate?

You book an A-Level resit through the same four-step process used for any private candidate entry:

### 1\. Choose your subject and exam board

Check which exam board applies to your subject — we're an approved A-Level exam centre for AQA, Edexcel and OCR, and each product page lists which board or boards run that subject.

### 2\. Book before the entry deadline

Every subject has a published entry deadline. Booking before it means you pay the standard entry fee; booking after means late or high late fees apply on top, so it's worth checking as soon as you know which subject you're resitting.

### 3\. Provide your ID and UCI number

You'll need valid photo ID to book and bring on exam day. If you sat the A-Level before, you'll need the UCI (Unique Candidate Identity) number issued at the time — usually 12 numbers followed by a letter, found on old statements of entry, results or certificates. If you don't have one, the exam centre will issue you a new one.

### 4\. Sit your exam and receive your results

You'll sit the exam at the centre's exam hall on the date and time set nationally by the exam board. Results are issued on the same national results day as school candidates, with certificates following a few months later.

## Can I resit an A-Level in November, like GCSE English or Maths?

You cannot resit an A-Level in November, because A-Level exams are only held once a year in the summer series. [Ofqual's student guide to exams](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/ofqual-student-guide-to-exams-and-assessments-in-2026/what-you-need-to-know-before-your-exams) lists November sittings for GCSE English Language and Mathematics only. If you don't get the grade you need, the earliest you can resit an A-Level is the following summer.

This makes timing worth planning carefully, particularly if a resit is needed to satisfy a university conditional offer or a UCAS deadline.

## What happens to my practical endorsement if I'm resitting A-Level Biology, Chemistry or Physics?

If you've already passed the practical endorsement for A-Level Biology, Chemistry or Physics, you can carry it forward and only resit the written exams. [OCR's practical endorsement FAQs](https://www.ocr.org.uk/subjects/science/positive-about-practical/faqs/) confirm that a pass may be carried forward and used alongside the grade from your resit. When booking, you select the practical carry-forward option and provide the UCI number you used the first time.

If you haven't completed a practical endorsement before, or home education meant you couldn't access one, our exam-board-approved practical course covers it alongside the written entry. Our [A-Level science practical endorsement guide](/blogs/learning-hub/a-level-science-practical-endorsement-guide) explains how it works.

## Is there a limit to how many times you can resit an A-Level?

You can book an A-Level resit with us as a private candidate in any summer series, so there is no set number of attempts you are restricted to. Every entry is subject to the usual JCQ and exam board entry requirements.

## Is there an age limit for A-Level resits?

There is no upper age limit for sitting an A-Level as a private candidate, whether it's your first attempt or a resit years later.
