Subject Information
GCSE Physical Education
GCSE Physical Education provides students with the knowledge, understanding and skills to develop their own performance in a range of sports as well as understanding the impacts and benefits of participation in sport on both individuals and society. GCSE Physical Education is excellent preparation for A Level Physical Education and would also benefit students looking at BTEC courses in Sports and Physical Education
Our approved GCSE Physical Education exam centre welcomes private candidates for exams with OCR. We provide a safe, well-organised environment designed to support you through every step, ensuring your exam experience is smooth and stress free helping you to gain a recognised qualification in GCSE Physical Education proficiency under official exam conditions.
FAQ GCSE Physical Education:
Can I carry forward my coursework if I am resitting?
Yes, pick the appropriate option. You will need to provide the UCI number you used when you originally took the exams and provide evidence that the coursework has been completed.
I am completing my coursework with a tutor or distance learning provider, is this acceptable?
We are unable to accept coursework completed with a tutor for GCSE Physical Education.
If I select the ‘Coursework Required’ option what does this provide?
You will need to provide video evidence of your participation in the three sports that you have chosen (one team, one individual and one other). Along with the videos you should also complete a log of competitive participation in your chosen sports. These will be reviewed and assessed by our GCSE Physical Education specialist. In all videos the candidate being assessed must be able to be clearly identified. Details of how to supply the evidence will be sent to you by email.
For the ‘Analysing and Evaluating Performance’ component of the coursework you will be required to attend the centre in Birmingham for two days in April to complete the task under controlled conditions. The dates for this will be emailed to you in March.
We strongly recommend that you familiarise yourself with the OCR Guide to NEA document as this provides the criteria for the coursework in GCSE Physical Education including the skills needing to be demonstrated in the Physical Performance and the format of the written part of the coursework.
Can I choose the sports I use for my Physical Performance section of the coursework?
You can select any sports as long as they are listed in the exam board specification and conform to their criteria. You must select at least one individual and one team sport. A sport that can be played both individually and as a team can only be used once, for example playing single tennis is an individual sport while doubles is a team sport, but you could not include both of these. You also cannot include sports which are very similar, for example Rugby League and Rugby Union are not counted as separate sports.

How do I take the speaking component of the GCSE English Language?
The speaking component is conducted via Zoom. Details will be sent to you nearer to the examination date.

'Information to be added to GCSE, IGCSE, AS, A Level MFL Subjects'
I haven't completed the GCSE science subjects practical activities, am I required to do them?
The specification states “Practical activities must be carried out by all students taking GCSE science subjects for the first time”. Students won’t be assessed whilst conducting their practical work, but the written exam will include questions on it. Therefore, candidates lacking hands on experience will be at an immediate disadvantage. For candidates retaking the GCSE science subjects with the current specification, the practical activities are optional.
I don’t have a passport or driving license. What other forms of ID are acceptable?
We can accept a recently expired (12 months) passport at the time of booking. However, you will need to bring a valid passport or driving licence to the exams. Alternatively a Pass Card issued by Citizen Card through the Post Office is acceptable
Do you need to have completed a course in order to register for the exam?
No, you do not need to have completed a formal study course in order to apply to take the exam. Many of our learners are ‘self-taught’ having used tutors or online resources.
What is a UCI number?
A UCI (Unique Candidate Identity) number is issued to candidates when they first take exams and should ideally be used for all exams that they take after this. If you have not taken any exams previously we will create a new UCI. If you have taken any previous exams please enter your UCI before completing your booking. The UCI number takes the form or 12 numbers followed by a letter (e.g. 202120201234X) and can normally be found on statements of entry or results or on some exam certificates.
When transferring marks for speaking test components, coursework, or practical endorsements, it is crucial to provide the Unique Candidate Identifier (UCI) number that was originally assigned to those specific subjects. This UCI number is essential for us to correctly carry forward your achieved marks and ensure the integrity of your academic record. Please ensure this identifier is readily available when you are making arrangements for the transfer of your results.
